Being a Butler

Butlers provide formal assistance within the residence though service of meals, managing gatekeeper duties and extensive wardrobe maintenance. A butler often operates at a more formal level than that of a housekeeper or houseman and is very front of house and client facing. Butler responsibilities can often be combined with House Manager duties depending on the size and scope of the residence’s staff.

Core Responsibilities

  • Spearheading the service-based and concierge operations of the residence through elevated standards
  • Receiving and greeting guests, opening doors, and attending to individualized guest needs
  • Providing formal table service for meals and refreshments, as well as wine paring and presentation
  • Event planning, coordinating, and executing
  • Maintaining wine cellar and collections
  • Preparing, packing and unpacking garments for travel with expert attention to fine fabrics and special pieces
  • Managing additional staff members and vendors

Skillset Required

  • Experience with fine dining and beverage service
  • Knowledge of wine collections, storage and pairings
  • Staff managements
  • Ability to problem-solve and think quickly
